CBS news viewers may never underestimate sleep again

As the summer and its high temperatures continue, many of us feel groggy, lazy or just plain tired. Live at 9 news ran a segment for its Memphis viewers discussing ways that we can boost our energy to help us enjoy the beautiful weather. Hosts invited registered dietitian and Living Skinny in Fat Genes author Dr. Felicia Stoler to the show and asked her for advice. She discussed Suntheanine and explained why we should never take sleep for granted.

“People don’t realize how important sleep is. It allows our body this opportunity to rest, repair, re-charge and re-new,” Stoler said. “Most Americans don’t get enough sleep … I’m talking kids and adults. And you can’t catch up on the weekends. It doesn’t count.”

Sleep is so important – and lack of sleep is associated with so many health issues – that Stoler said that she encourages people to always practice good sleep hygiene. “One of the things you can think about doing, besides, you know, having quiet space is even considering taking a supplement … something like L-theanine,” Stoler suggested. Suntheanine, a patented, pure form of the amino acid L-theanine, is produced via a patented enzymatic process. “What it does is it helps to keep you calm and focused and it allows you to relax so that you can get to sleep easier.” It also has been shown to improve sleep quality.

Stoler explained how Suntheanine is different from other sleep-enhancing supplements. “It’s not like melatonin where you have to get into the dark after you take [it],” And because it does not contain caffeine, it will not give you late-night, sleep-interrupting jitters. Suntheanine has been found to be most effective in the range of 50 – 200 mg and its calming effects can usually be felt within 30 – 40 minutes of consumption.

Felicia Stoler is a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist and expert consultant in nutrition and healthful living, compensated to provide her professional opinions.
