L-theanine may reduce stress, give you a better night’s sleep

L-theanine

Stress is North America’s number one silent killer, contributing to everything from cardiovascular disease to anxiety, depression and dementia. Alternative medicine expert and clinician Bryce Wylde caught up with Taiyo’s Vice President Scott Smith to learn how L-theanine may help.

In this interview, Smith points out that even though tea contains caffeine, it also has a calming and relaxing effect which is attributed to a natural amino acid called L-theanine. “{Taiyo} studied this unique amino acid and {was} able to isolate it. Now we can deliver it in its pure form for supplements, foods and beverages,” Smith explains. He adds that L-theanine normalizes the body’s neurotransmitters, and can normalize imbalances caused by stress, pollution, caffeine and other triggers. “When we consume the theanine – Suntheanine – within about 15 to 20 minutes we have that very noticeable calming, relaxing effect,” he says.

L-theanine stimulates production of the alpha brain waves, a state often achieved by meditation where one is deeply relaxed and mentally alert. Its effects have been shown to last up to 8-12 hours.

Wylde appreciates that L-theanine also helps to resolve a common problem among his patients: being able to stay asleep. “That’s invaluable!”

“Suntheanine does not induce sleep … It’s not a tranquilizer or a sedative,” Smith clarifies. Instead it puts you in a calm, relaxed state so that you can enter sleep more rapidly, sleep deeper and wake up without grogginess. Most recently, researchers have found that L-theanine is effective at helping fifth-year pharmacy students reduce their anxiety and get better quality rest.

L-theanine can now be found in chewable tablets, capsules, beverages and other foods. Wylde concludes, “If you are one of those people … who deals with more stress than they care to on a daily basis, consider L-theanine. But look for Suntheanine on the package.”

Additional information on the clinical studies that demonstrate Suntheanine’s calm relaxing effects, and L-theanine’s ability to improve sleep quality, can be found at Suntheanine.com.
